The Great Musical Adventure part 1

Updated: Feb 20, 2019

Hildegard von Bingen

So, for this past week, I gathered composers of the medieval period and now will sift through them and find their best works. I listened to Ordo Virtutum by Hildegard von Bingen. There is something about this old work that brings a chill down your spine. The beautiful interwoven melodies with the hollow sound all sung in Latin. While it is an "old" work, you almost feel as though you are listening to an opera in some parts. There is occasionally a dialogue going on in between the chorus. I'm sure that the translation of these lyrics has a rich and marvelous message.

Instead of sitting down and listening to great old works in one setting, here is a list of medieval composers I will listen, study, and précis.

1. Hildegard von Bingen

2. Pérotin

3. Guillaume de Machaut

4. Tuotilo

5. Giovanni de Cascia

Guillaume de Machaut

These are only a select few of all the composers from the Medieval era. There are many others and some bleed over into the Renaissance period. I am learning that there are older musical works I have never known about. It is quite exciting!

Here is a recording to Hildegard von Bingen's Ordo Virtutum.

Cheers!

Chloe Elizabeth
